CHARRED TIMBER – Shou Sugi Ban

One of the many benefits of using charred timber also know as Shou Sugi Ban is the low maintenance aspect, the process of charring the timber gives it a natural layer of protection, however any timber exposed to the elements requires maintenance at some point.

Eco timber will supply your charred timber with a factory coat of Cutek black ash oil to lock in the moisture before delivery. It is then recommended once installed to apply a second coat of Cutek oil.

If done this way it allows you to leave the timber for up to 5-7 years. After 5-7 years its best to recoat the timber to help with re-hydration and assist in maintaining the timbers natural integrity over its lifetime.

We like to use Cutek as its a penetrative oil so each coat helps protect from within.

*The 5-7 year maintenance guide is a general indication, it could be more or less time depending on the location of your project and the exposure to weather conditions like extreme sun or rain.

Charring timber doesn’t make it completely resistant to the elements. However its one of the most durable external timbers to use in Australia’s harsh climate today. Over time there is a slight ‘silvering off’ effect to the timber. With timber being a natural product this is a natural progression for the timber. Once again if you apply your Cutek black ash as recommended this will slow down the process.

External: after the product has had its first coat of Cutek, it is a penetrative oil which soaks into the timber and once dried essentially it seals the coating or seals the char or the powdery residue that people worry about. Once the charred cladding is fully installed a gentle hosing down with water will wash away any left over sawdust or the like left on the surface of the cladding.

Internal: for internal application the charred timber is coated in …….. therefore its sealed and no does not come off on your hands or clothes.

We have a large range of timber profiles here at Eco Timber Group.
The most favoured by our clients in Shou Sugi Ban is either –
120mm x 19mm shiplap cladding or the 70mm x 19mm shiplap cladding.
One other popular profile is also the 3D shiplap cladding.
Eco can offer these profiles in a wide range of Australian hardwoods to suit your design concept.
